Tell us about your role and how long you’ve worked for FirstPort
I joined FirstPort in August 2011 and work as a Senior HR Business Partner supporting the Operations teams and colleagues who work at our developments. My role involves providing strategic business partnering to Directors and Heads of Department and I have a team of HR Business Partners and Specialists who deliver HR services across our Operations teams. We also support the delivery of our organisational transformation and digital programmes through organisational design and change management.
What do you do in the first hour after you wake up?
I like to get my mind active and ready for the day ahead, so I take my very energetic Jack Russell dog for a walk around the fields where I live. The problem is she always wants to walk further than the time I have available to take her!
What do you like most about your job?
I love the variety my job gives me every day, no two are the same. I also like the fact that people are at the heart of everything I do, whether it be reviewing what we’re doing to support our colleagues, building a performance tool or researching engagement methodology. Everything I do is with the people who work for FirstPort in mind. In turn, this has a positive impact on our customers too.
What challenges do you face?
Achieving everything I want to in the time that I have. Also, helping leaders and managers to respond and react consistently to the ever-changing landscape of people management.
What led you to take this opportunity?
I worked for a big estate agency and they were going through large scale relocations just as I was finishing my CIPD Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management. I took the opportunity to move to a different industry and try out all the new HR skills I had learned during my Postgraduate Diploma. There was a fixed term contract role available at FirstPort to cover some maternity leave, so I took it and have never looked back.
What is your greatest achievement?
Bringing up my two stepchildren and watching them become amazing young adults – teaching one to drive and the other to continue to knuckle down at school.
Who is your inspiration?
My husband – it’s strange because we are polar opposites. He wasn’t very academic at school, loves to be outside and around lots of people (bit of a social butterfly really), whereas I’m more of the shy type that has my head in a book most of the time.
What keeps you busy outside of work?
Remodelling our home, looking after the family and the dog are pretty much the central parts to my life outside FirstPort.
What personal goal have you set yourself this year?
To achieve the Level 7 Award in Organisation Design and Development
What is one thing that people may not know about you?
I used to play cricket and basketball for Hampshire when I was at school. I was quite athletic back in my younger days – then I got older, a little lazier and a lot busier!
