Later living is about far more than housing. It is about creating places where people can remain independent, connected and supported as their needs evolve. Yet many older people across the UK continue to live in homes that no longer suit their circumstances, whether because of accessibility challenges, isolation or a lack of appropriate support networks.

From a property management perspective, later living communities play a wider societal role that is not always fully recognised. Loneliness among older people is increasingly acknowledged as a significant public health challenge, with implications not only for individual wellbeing but also for health and social care services.

Research from organisations including the Campaign to End Loneliness and the World Health Organization has highlighted the link between chronic loneliness and a range of serious health conditions, including depression, dementia, heart disease and stroke. More than one million older people in the UK are estimated to experience chronic loneliness, underlining the scale of the challenge.

Well-managed retirement developments can help address this directly by creating enviornments that encourage social interaction, activity and support networks.

At FirstPort, we see first-hand the value that strong communities can bring. Across many of our developments, residents participate in a wide range of activities, from coffee mornings and book clubs to exercise sessions and social groups, helping to create supportive environments where friendships can flourish.

Despite these benefits, retirement living is often misunderstood. Too often it is viewed solely through the lens of age, rather than as an opportunity to maintain independence, build social connections and access a lifestyle designed around changing needs.

As the UK’s population continues to age, the role of later living communities will become increasingly important. When delivered well, they offer benefits not only for residents, but also for families, local communities and the wider public services that support them. The conversation about later living should therefore be viewed not simply as a housing issue, but as part of a broader discussion about health, wellbeing and community resilience.
