Southend Beach Clean

Eight FirstPort teams, consisting of colleague and resident volunteers, recently gathered at eight coastal locations across England and Scotland to take part in the Marine Conservation Society’s annual Great British Beach Clean.

The nationwide initiative supports environmental sustainability whilst benefitting local communities, bringing together thousands of volunteers to clean up Britain’s beaches and safeguard marine life. As one of the UK’s largest citizen science projects focused on ocean health, the event plays a vital role in tackling coastal pollution.

Volunteers removed litter from a designated 100-metre stretch of beach, whilst collating the types of waste collected. This data helps the Marine Conservation Society campaign for stronger environmental protections and contributes to the global International Coastal Cleanup database.

Property Manager, Anna Latkowska, who led the beach clean at Highcliffe Beach, said: “It was truly inspiring to see such a strong turnout for this year’s Great British Beach Clean. Now in our third year of taking part, the event continues to grow, with more volunteers joining us each time – a clear sign of how much our local beaches mean to the community.

“We’re already looking forward to welcoming even more volunteers next year!”
