At FirstPort developments across the country, the warm sense of community continues to shine through – from marking special birthdays, charity events and book clubs to celebrations as a community. These special moments continue to show how both residents and colleagues embrace the community spirit.

Getting active for Cancer Research UK

Residents at Arden Court took on a walking challenge earlier this year in aid of Cancer Research UK. Roger Lucas and his wife Jan embarked on a fundraising challenge to each walk 62 miles throughout January. Despite encountering challenging weather conditions along the way and having reached their initial goal by the 13th January, they decided to continue until the end of the month, reaching an incredible 133 miles. Supported and encouraged by their friends and neighbours at Arden Court, they raised over £700 for the charity.

Over at Holmoaks House and Beck Court, Development Manager Helen ran 10K in February for Cancer Research. With the help of residents and colleagues, over £200 was raised  for the charity.

Residents celebrate love for literature

The community at Briary Court recently came together to mark the launch of a resident Pauline Le Page’s new book. Pauline, who writes as P.R. Page, was born and educated in Reigate, Surrey, and now lives on the Isle of Wight. As a mother of three and devoted grandmother, family is central to Pauline’s life and one of the key inspirations for her second book, which is dedicated to her late son-in-law, who sadly passed away in 2020.

At 27, Pauline joined the Territorial Army and became the first female sergeant in the 6/7 Queens Regiment. Her curiosity and spirit of adventure have taken her across Canada by train, to Australia to watch an Ashes test match, and throughout New Zealand – including a memorable pillion ride on a Harley Davidson. She later learned to ride a motorbike herself at the age of 69.

After releasing two books previously, Pauline has now launched her third book in her trilogy series, Melissa’s Revenge. She hosted a book launch at the development, where she was supported and celebrated by her friends and family.

Also sharing a love of literature, Townbridge Court recently introduced a book club, where residents have shown great enthusiasm in getting involved and gathering to read, reflect and share their thoughts on the chosen book. This has encouraged a love for reading as well as providing a chance for residents to connect, engage and build friendships through their shared literary journey.

Celebrating centenarian milestones across our communities

It has been a remarkable few weeks across our schemes, with several residents reaching extraordinary milestone birthdays. At Timothy Hackworth, Nora Jacklin marked her 100th birthday with a tea party, joined by fellow residents who came together to celebrate her special day. Barbara Beeston also turned 100, enjoying a gathering with close family and friends in the residents’ lounge at Mumbles Bay Court.

Meanwhile, at Catton Court, much-loved resident Mike Howard celebrated his 103rd birthday. He enjoyed a special afternoon tea and entertained guests with ghost stories he had written himself. The celebration was made even more memorable by the attendance of Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk, Stewart Blackburn, his wife Sally, and Lindsay Carruthers, Chairwoman of the Old Catton British Legion.

Spreading the love

During February, residents at Forest Lodge came together for a special Valentine’s Day supper for the whole community.  The event created a warm and welcoming atmosphere where residents shared a meal and celebrated the connections that thrive within their community.

Alongside the Valentine’s Day celebrations, residents also enjoyed a delightful Lions Club Tea Party. This offered another opportunity for everyone to come together and enjoy refreshments whilst being surrounded by family and friends.

Both events reflected the vibrant community spirit at Forest Lodge and the joy residents find in spending meaningful moments together.
